Frequently asked questions

Why does a cup of flour weigh less than a cup of sugar?

A cup measures volume, and ingredients have different densities. Smidgen uses a typical density for each ingredient, measured spooned and levelled, from King Arthur Baking and the USDA. A packed or sifted cup can weigh 10 to 20 percent more or less. For baking, weigh your ingredients when you can.

Which cup does Smidgen use?

You choose it when you open the app the first time: the US cup (237 ml), the metric cup (250 ml, used in most of Europe and Australia), or the imperial cup (284 ml, older UK recipes). You can change it at any time in settings.

What does Smidgen Pro do?

Smidgen Pro is a one-time purchase, with no subscription. It removes the ads, unlocks every ingredient, and lets you add your own ingredients. It also keeps more favourites and your full history.

How do I add my own ingredient?

With Pro, open the ingredient list and tap Add your own ingredient at the end. Fill one cup level, weigh it on a kitchen scale, and type the weight. To delete your ingredient, touch and hold it in the list.

I bought Pro on another iPhone. How do I get it back?

Open settings, tap See Pro, then Restore purchase. Use the same Apple Account you bought it with.

Why do I see ads?

The free version shows ads in the ingredient list: one near the top, then one every 20 ingredients. They come from Google AdMob. In the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland, you can change your ad choices in settings, under Ad privacy choices. Smidgen Pro removes the ads. The privacy policy explains what Google receives.

Which languages does Smidgen speak?

English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, and Portuguese for Portugal and for Brazil. Smidgen follows your iPhone’s language. To use another language for Smidgen only, open the iPhone’s Settings, then Apps, then Smidgen, then Language.
